B. Everett Jordan Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundment built for the purpose of regulating the downstream flow of the Haw River, which is a tributary of the Cape Fear River.  Original approval for the project came in 1963 with construction commencing in 1967.  It was opened to the public in 1982.

The entire project is Federally owned, with the majority of the land surrounding the lake being leased to the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation for recreational purposes, and to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for use as Game Lands.

At it’s normal pool of 216’ MSL (mean feet above sea level), the lake covers approximately 13,900 acres and has 150 miles of shoreline.  Because it is a flood control impoundment, the lake elevation can vary as much as 38’ feet (from 202’ MSL up to 240’ MSL).
